Body sizes

It has been a while since I wanted to touch on this topic but I don't know where I should start, and it's also a pretty sensitive topic - given my standard of English - I don't think I will be able to write out how I feel and what I want to say exactly.

That aside, here is what triggered me to write this post.

How insensitive some people are.

I'm 153cm, 32kg. I look horribly skinny and I can't grow fat for whatever the heck I eat.
Because of this, people tends to assume that I'm someone who doesn't eat a lot, or in worse cases, some people thought I starve myself just to maintain this skeleton figure I have.

Because of that terrible misunderstanding - most of them thought I am suffering from ANOREXIA.

I know I'm not the only skinny people out there who gets exposed to all sorts of negative comments about our body figures, which is why I'm writing this post to let other skinny people know THAT THEY ARE NOT ALONE.

First of all, people take the word ANOREXIA / ANOREXIC way too lightly.
I have friends who likes to call me anorexic as a joke and I'll just smile and try to brush it off because I don't want to appear as a petty freak but truth is - IT FCKING HURTS.
Being able to joke about this shows how they don't think it's anything serious at all, and most of them don't even know the meaning of anorexia or anorexic, and just throwing the word around simply.

Here's the actual definition of it - from wikipedia.

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by immoderate food restriction and irrational fear of gaining weight, as well as a distorted body self-perception. It typically involves excessive weight loss and is usually found more in females than in males. Because of the fear of gaining weight, people with this disorder restrict the amount of food they consume. This restriction of food intake causes metabolic and hormonal disorders. Outside of medical literature, the terms anorexia nervosa and anorexia are often used interchangeably; however, anorexia is simply a medical term for lack of appetite, and people with anorexia nervosa do not in fact, lose their appetites. Patients suffering from anorexia nervosa may experience dizziness, headaches, drowsiness and a lack of energy.

It is an EATING DISORDER, IRRATIONAL FEAR OF GAINING WEIGHT, AND A DISTORTED BODY SELF-PERCEPTION.

It's more like a mental problem which hence causes a change physically.

Being skinny DOES NOT mean that person is anorexic. How much do you know just by looking at his/her appearances?
On top of that, what if a person really happens to have anorexia? How will he/she react to your 'joke'?

On the other hand, why will some people suffer from anorexia anyway? BECAUSE OF INSENSITIVE PEOPLE who teases skinny people about how FAT they look when they actually really aren't.

There are people who are born to be skinny, and no matter how hard they try to grow fatter, they can't.
Just like how fat people dislike being called fat, skinny people dislike being called skinny either.

I don't get why that is to everyone, fat people will be hurt when disgusting insults are being thrown at them, but skinny people wouldn't.

To add on, there are many fat people who tried really hard, risking their lives to become skinnier just to fit into nice dresses.
It is not a nice thing to hear, and me, too, will not want ANY of them to go through any miserable times just to be skinnier.

However, just because there are many many news about fat people trying too hard to become skinny, are you neglecting the skinny people who are trying too hard to become fatter?

It's good to console people who needs consolation but pulling others down just to make oneself feel better isn't a good way either.

There are many people out there, especially on the internet, pulls out ALL the disadvantages of being skinny and how disgustingly ugly it is to be skinny instead of fat.

MIND YOU, IF YOU'RE TRYING TO SAVE LIVES, YOU'RE DOING IT SO WRONG.

Even though it's sad and you don't want fat people to kill themselves due to their strong desire to be skinny, you do not have to bring in skinny people and insult them.

Isn't it funny how you're trying to save their lives but at the same time, trying to kill another?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say how GOOD being skinny is AT ALL - I just want people to know how difficult it is for skinny people to have to suffer from all these insults. People NEEDS to know how much it hurts for us as well.

Not EVERYONE wants to be skinny.

Lastly, it's not good to be TOO SKINNY or TOO FAT. We all know, I'm sure about it.

However,

If we have a choice, who wouldn't want to look perfect?

Who wouldn't want to have a figure similar to a VS model?
Who wouldn't want to look good and feel confident?

It's not easy - but your insensitivity and ignorance aren't helping either.

  1. Peishi, I know how you feel about those insults. I am one of those skinny people like you too. Being called skinny and made fun of is not a nice thing. I agree with you 100% that being called anorexia fucking hurts. Cheer up alright, Peishi. I go through the same type of things you go through, like people making fun of you/being called anorexia. I understand completely how you feel. It's not just you going through these kind of things. I am too. So We are in this together with others too. :)

    Cheers. God bless you.

    Your fan,
    Dawn.

  2. I think another reason why your friends make that joke with you is probably because they don't truly see you as such, and at the same time they, as you said, don't think you would be offended. Partially because as you say, the general conception is that being skinny isn't usually an insult, like calling someone fat. And probably also because they think you're confident enough in your own appearance not to be offended by it.

I'm male, but I've also been pretty skinny all my life. And I remember one of my teachers approaching me one time, and asking "do you eat enough at hom?". I eat ALL OF THE THINGS! But due to genes and high metabolism, I won't gain weight. Not unless I eat 10000 pancaces like a pig perhaps, but that would only lead me to getting a fat belly probably, and not change my overall body weight.

I can say this though, Peishi. Once you get towards your mid 20's, your metabolism will slow down a bit, and you might see a bit of a positive change. You won't get fat unless you try carelessly, but you might go a little bit towards the direction you prefer.

Though in the end, we're all different, and I think you seem perfect just the way you are.
As long as we're healthy, there's no need to go out of our way to change our body for anyone else.

  3. totally agree, I'm from mexico (country with the world's first place of obesity) in our culture it's easy for people to say: "if you're not chubby you're not healthy", I'm 47 kg, 1.73cm, you can you imagine what people tends to say to me, luckily I amnot the kind of people who lend attention to what others say. I'm not sick, I have not any kind of mental disorder, I'm just skinny, and that does not stop me achieve my goals, but there are people weaker than others thatlet the others words affect them, especially the fatties who risk their life to try to be "normal", we are all normal!!but some people are just very insensitive and can not understand that there are things beyond the physical situation of a person, and unfortunately if that's how they think will never be able to see beyond and that's really sad.

  11. I feel you, Pei Shi. I was and am still facing the same condition too. Frankly, I do eat a lot. I rarely skip meals and I am still quite skinny and people around me thinks that I'm on a diet/eating disorders/blablabla. It kinda piss me off whenever they ask me to eat more because I look so unhealthy and I really feel like throwing a bowl of rice on their face for being so rude because they don't even understand my body condition. UGHHH.

  14. I don't usually visit your blog but I'm glad I managed to chance upon this post. Some people might see it as a pointless rant, but I think it's much more than that.

There are simply too many insensitive people around. I'm not sure what sort of traumatic event caused them to behave this way, perhaps they just lack EQ or they simply do not bother to care.

It might be oblivious to them, but they can inflict serious emotional damage to others when armed with hurtful words. Regardless if it was a joke or not, I'm pretty sure it still stings.

I hereby apologise on behalf of everyone that might have hurt people due to their insensitivity.

  15. hi peishi. you said that you couldn't gain weight by eating. maybe you could gain muscle mass? maybe some conditioning workouts could help :)
just a suggestion from a loyal reader

  16. Peishi, you do not need to change for anyone or try to be fatter. You are already looking good in your current body size.
Besides, being confident is being cool with WHO YOU ARE and not being cool based on what others think is cool.

  17. Proud of you for being brave to touch this on topic. A while ago, people was fat-shaming. Now people try to 'change' and make curvy people the norm without realizing they are thin-shaming.
I believe weight doesn't matter as long as you're comfortable and healthy :)

  18. Omg Pei Shi I feel you... I'm tall and skinny (makes it even worse) and people always say I'm like a bamboo :(

  20. Hey peishi!I'm 150cm, 30 kg and I'm so glad that you touched on this topic! So I have really high metabolism which makes it almost impossible to gain any weight but many of my friends keep saying that I have an eating disorder because of my petite and skinny size and I feel really hurt cause I know for the fact that I eat 4 meals a day which is more than them. Sometimes I feel like I'm abnormal or something cause I can't seem to gain any weight even though I eat so much! My friends sometimes even ask me how I keep my weight this light and asked if I'm anorexic and it's actually really sad, like I don't even know the answer myself. Lots of people also tell me they wanna be as skinny as me and when I tell them it's actually not good, they think I'm rubbing it in to make them feel bad..Sometimes I just wish I wasn't so "different" y'know? Well I'm glad that I know I'm not facing this type of situation alone. Thanks for reading!

  22. I guess its ok in society to call someone skinny ... Insensistivity only applies to fat people i guess ... I guess people who are negative are generally insecure about their own bodies ... Don't worry too much about it as long as you are healthy ... If it make u feel any better i think u look great!! ... :-) hav a great one!

  23. Omg Peishi, you totally speak my mind in your blogpost. I just tweeted abt this issue 2 days ago after I read this article: http://www.projecteve.com/confessions-of-a-skinny-girl/
It's almost writing about me until she mentioned that she secretly wants to remain skinny. I would very much like to grow some meat. Hahaha. Like you, I also eat and eat but can't grow fat!
Thank you for writing this so I know I'm not alone. :) And yes, being called skinny really hurts the same as calling someone fat..

  24. Props to ya for talking about this! Thank you, finallly someone who stands out for this.
I have also been the butt of anorexia jokes even though I eat a ton. It's not right for some people to judge others without thinking about how they feel. Even if it is a friend!
For real though, if they want to help, go help those who actually are suffering from eating disorders. -_-

p.s. you are incredibly beautiful and don't let those stupid comments affect you

  27. Read many of your posts, you seem a lovable friend & look like Dawn Yeoh. Don't be offended, I'm busybodying/caring. You may not be anorexic, maybe you like thinness & as a blogger, need to look good. I like thinness but there's a limit be it natural or not.

Your bmi is 13.6. Putting things in perspective, Yoona is 17, Sooyoung is 16.6 & Qiuqiu is 16. From a health pov, 16 is the lowest healthy bmi & that's the bmi of many idols. You need to gain 5kg to look like her w/o height. Apparently, you're far thinner than her. Comparing thigh gap, yours is far wider than hers.

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ana_Carolina_Reston

She died at bmi 13.3 cos of anorexia. Maybe you're not anorexic as inferred that you love food.

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index

My bmi is 16, underweight & you're very severely underweight. Honestly, if I'm ill & lose 2kg, my bmi is 15. If you're ill & lose 2kg, your bmi is 12.8. You may look ok but your immune system & organs may not. Fats are needed to absorb shock & protect them & tailbone. If you lose weight, you may not be alive. Your menses may stop. Check with doc & see if you're healthy.

Google low bmi risks as I'm lazy to type, osteo is prevalent in 50% sgreans & it affects low bmi ppl most. Your bone looks brittle & can be broken easily if you fall, the pain is no joke if you dislocate it. If your ribs are obvious, sth is wrong & you know it. Not cursing, just warning you ppl die at bmi 15 from heart attack. Do you feel nauseous/have palpitations when running?

To end, I'm reiterating that even if natural, you need to gain. Do you see adults with bmi 13.6/32kg? Even idols ain't that thin, there's a limit to everything. See a doc & with effort you can, if you want. Maybe ppl around you ain't worried as you're thin since young but seriously, even i find you too thin. Imo, thinness is crucial so is health.

Maybe harsh but sincerely hope you heed my advice. Your bod, your responsibility. Anything happens in adulthood/old age haunting you, you may regret. Health is vital, lose it & it can be forever. Don't let a silly decision commited when young to torture you like others. Treasure your bod, it's a gift many admire.

Sorry for ranting, hope you catch my ball. God bless ppl around you & you a happy & healthy life! :)
